SWAN VALLEY DISTRICT RECREATION REPORT

SWAN VALLEY

Girls Jewelry Making:  Classes will be held on Monday, February 27, March 5, 12 & 19 at the Town of Swan River Committee Room.  Ages 8 – 14.  Advanced class (for anyone who has taken a class with Christina before) will be held from 8:00 – 9:00 pm.  Beginner class will be held from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.  Cost:  $40.  Instructor:  Christine Fleming.  Register early as space is limited.

 

Youth Indoor Soccer: Mondays at Taylor School.  Grade K- Grade 3 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm and  Grade 4 – 6 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. 

 

Youth Basketball : Thursdays at the ESRSS.  6:30 – 8:00 pm. Grade 6 – 8. $50. Coach:  Ian Kitch.  Register at the Rec Office.                   

 Adult Drop-In Basketball: Tuesdays at the SVRSS. 8:00 – 10:00 pm. FREE thanks to a generous donation from the Swan River Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative. 

 

Adult/Senior Walking:  At the ESRSS. Senior Walking is on Wednesdays 4:30 – 5:30 pm.  Call Connie at 734-5707 for more info.  Adult Walking is on Tuesday and Thursdays 7:00 – 8:00 pm.  Supervisor:  Lynn Williamson

Do you want to learn how to curl?: Open to students in grades 3-5 on Friday, Feb. 3 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Cost: $5 supper included. All equipment will be provided. Instructors: Marni Zamzow (734-3370) and Kent Meyn. Sponsored by the Swan Valley Community Sport Alliance. Adventure Hiking – Intro session:  Are you interested in hiking day trips, weekends or longer? Plan to attend on February 13 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the LP Canada boardroom on Westwood road.   This session will provide useful info about hiking for novice to advanced hikers, including; how to plan for a hike, tips and equipment, food and packing tips, and safety and environmental awareness.  If there is enough interest, more in depth sessions will be planned with guided hikes this winter, spring and summer.  To register, contact Barry Waito at 525-2421 or waito@mymts.net.

 

Swim camp and Officials’ clinics: Scheduled for Dauphin on Sat Feb. 4 and Sunday. Feb 5.  Anyone interested in being a part of swimming for the upcoming MB Games in Swan River, please check out these clinics. Swim Camp times:  Saturday, Feb. 4:  9:00 – 11:00 am pool session, 5:00 – 7:00 pm pool session (plus Yoga / dry land in between  pool sessions TBC), Sunday,  Feb. 5: 9:00 – 11:00 am pool Session. Officials Sessions on Saturday – Feb. 4.  Timer Clinic in the morning and stroke & turn judge Clinic in the afternoon  (must take timer clinic first).  To register, call Swim Manitoba at 925-5779.

 

Swan Valley Badminton:  Held at the SVRSS.  Held on Thursdays from 8:00 – 11:00 pm and Sundays from 7:00 – 10:00 pm.  Everyone welcome.  Cost:  Adults drop in fee $3 or $75 for the season.  Students drop in fee $2 or $55 for the season.  $110 for a family.  Contact Larry Kooistra for more info at 734-5139.

 

St. John’s Ambulance Standard First Aid Course:  Includes all levels of CPR and AED training.  Class #1 to be held on February 18 & 19 from 8:30 – 4:30 pm at the Minitonas Firehall.  Class #2 to be held on March 31 & April 1 from 8:30 – 4:30 pm at the Minitonas Firehall.  To register, call Toni Hayes at 281-1897.

Swan Valley Carving Club:  Meets every 2nd Thursday beginning on Jan. 19 at 1:30 pm in the Swan Valley Museum Hall. Everyone is welcome.  No charge.  Learn to carve.  Contact Glen Henderson for more info 734-2127.

Conrad's Adult Junior Curling Bonspiel - Saturday, Feb. 4 in Swan River - All teams need to consist of 2 adults and 2 juniors, 3 games guaranteed (4 end games), prize for all junior curlers, prize for event winners, supper included - cost: $80 per team – to enter contact Marni Zamzow at 734-3370.

Valley Water & Septic Junior Curling Bonspiel - Saturday, March 10 in Swan River - Make a team of 4 juniors, 3 games guaranteed (4 ends), lunch and prize for all participants included, cost: $60 per team (one adult per team needs to be on ice supervising at all times.) - to enter contact Marni Zamzow at 734-3370.

 

Soprano Sarah Kirsch:  At the Swan River Library on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 8:00 pm.  Tickets $25 at the Library.

 

Better Beginnings Taylor School:  Will be held January 26, February 7, 15, 24, March 6, 14 & 23 at 9:15 am in the Kindergarten room.  Free for children (birth to 5 years old) and their parents welcome for crafts, stories, activities, snacks and fun.  Leader:  Eugenia Barker

 

Better Beginnings Heyes School:   Will be held on January 27, February 2, 8, 16, 23, 27, March 7, 15 & 22 at 10:00 am in the Room #100.  Free for children (birth to 5 years old) and their parents welcome for crafts, stories, activities, snacks and fun.  Leader:  Donna Burghart.

MINITONAS      

Adult Walking Program:  At the Minitonas Middle Years School hallway.  Held on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.  FREE.  Supervisor:  Kathy Booth.   

 

Adult Recreation Basketball:  Held at the Minitonas Middle Years School.  Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Cost is $2/night or $30 for the season.  Supervisor:  Jacob Kornelson.  Call the Rec Office for more info.

BENITO

New Kid’s program in Benito Library:  Gluesticks, Giggles & Games. Saturdays from 2: 00 p.m. – 3: 00 p.m.

Starting February 11th.  Ages 3 to 5. (Preschool to Kindergarten).  Enjoy an hour of crafts, stories and games that will make you giggle and laugh!

 

The Swan Valley Human Library:  An exciting event is to happen at the Benito Library on Tuesday, February 7th from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 11th from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Swan Valley Human Library, were “ Human Books” will tell their stories. What a novel experience!

BOWSMAN

Bowsman Skating Arena- Public Skating:  Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30 pm, Sundays 1:00-2:00 pm, Shinny - Sundays 2:00-4:00 pm - $2 per person or a season pass.

Bowsman Jr. Rec Hockey:  For boys and girls ages 6 – 10 begins Monday, January 9th from 4:00 – 5:30 pm and will be held each Monday thereafter until the end of season.  Registration is $10 plus arena membership.  Please contact Sev Roberts at 238-4769.  Skates, helmet and hockey stick is all that is needed. A sponge puck will be used.  Jason Mullin will be coaching.

 

Bowsman Skating Club:  Begins Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 4:00 pm.  Will be held only on Wednesdays this year.  Instructor:  Kaleigh Sauder.  New lower fees this year.  5 and under $40.00 plus season pass.  6 and up $60.00 plus season pass.  Season pass, single $45.00 or family $75.00.  Please contact Skating coordinator, Tammy Potkonjak at 238-4626 or email tammycolette@xplornet.ca.
